Course Description
: R
unning away from placement is a significant problem for adolescents referred to out of home care.  Research has shown that as many as one-third of adolescents will be discharged prematurely from residential treatment due to runaway behavior.  Until recently, little was known about the characteristics of clients who engage in this behavior, and few efforts have been made to identify effective treatment interventions.

This course will provide participants with the latest research findings on runaway behavior, provide specific recommendations to improve placement outcomes, and offer concrete treatment recommendations and effective interventions for residential treatment providers.

Objectives of the Course:
By the end of the course,
participants will:

<
Fully understand the characteristics of adolescents who run away and how to conduct risk assessment at the time of placement.

<          Use research as a guide for selecting which type of residential treatment program will likely have the most favorable treatment outcome.

<          Know how to collaboratively identify running away as a primary treatment goal and increase the client's motivation to work on the behavior and stay in placement.

<          Understand the three types of runners and design treatment plans appropriate for each.

<          Use specific, cognitive-behavioral treatment interventions to effectively intervene and reduce runaway behavior.

<          Increase client motivation and commitment through videotaped examples.
